How to Say ‘Nice to meet you.’ in Japanese

はじめまして。

はじめまして。

💬 Usage Tip: Set phrase for first meetings. You can think of it as “This is our first time meeting.” Often said with a small bow.

🇯🇵 In Japan: Common combo: [はじめまして。よろしくお願いします。] In Japan, a light bow + this phrase is a friendly default.

Word-by-Word Breakdown

はじめはじめ

[hajime]

first time; for the first time (meeting)

From 「はじめて」 (for the first time). In greetings, it helps form 「はじめまして」 meaning “Nice to meet you.”

Example

はじめまして。はじめて会いますね。

Nice to meet you. It's our first time meeting, isn't it?

ましまし

[mashi]

(polite ending part of the greeting)

Part of the polite greeting 「はじめまして」. By itself it isn’t usually used as a standalone word; it contributes to the fixed phrase.

Example

はじめまして、と言うときに「まし」も入ります。

When you say 'Hajimemashite,' it also includes 'mashi.'

[te]

(polite form ending; 'te' sound)

The 「て」 here is the final sound in 「はじめまして」. Alone it’s a common hiragana and also appears as the て-form ending in verbs, but here it’s part of the set greeting.

Example

はじめまして、の最後は「て」です。

The last part of 'Hajimemashite' is 'te.'

What Learners Are Saying

Teaching in Osaka and I wanted to connect with my students beyond the classroom. The everyday conversation scenarios made my Japanese feel natural, not textbook-y.

Mia S., 25, English Teacher

Moved to Tokyo and the polite vs. casual speech levels were killing me. This app breaks it all down with real scenarios. My coworkers noticed the difference in weeks.

Kevin Z., 31, Game Developer

I tried five different apps before this one. The roleplay conversations are what finally made things click. I actually remember what I learn now.
